There's a common belief among people that you only need to hire movers if you're moving far away. Finding friends to help isn't as easy as you might think.
People often have visions of having 10 friends show up to help them move. But what if you put out the plea for help moving and few to no friends are able to help? In the COVID-19 pandemic, this is a very real possibility. Some of your friends may end up sick and quarantining when you move. Others may have to work at the last minute because their coworkers are out sick. Hiring movers is a more dependable way to get help with your move.
Your items will be protected by insurance.
Even if you're only driving things down the road, there is a potential they could fall over and be damaged in the moving truck. You could also get in an accident, damaging your things. If you're driving yourself, you will be responsible for the damage. If you hire movers, though, they'll be responsible for any damage. (Just check to make sure they have a good policy before you hire them.) Even when you're only moving across town, you want to make sure you're covered if something you own is ruined in the process.
Short-distance moves are easier than long-distance moves. But this doesn't mean you should go it on you own.
