Layers of the Earth
This website contains a review of the layers of the earth with lots of extra information not covered in the book.

Plate Tectonics
If you are having trouble understanding plate tectonics, you can learn more here. It has a history of the theory and a detailed discussion of how it is supposed to work, along with good animations. The website presents the theory in a old earth framework, but you can learn about a better, young-earth model in the "interesting links" section below.

Plate Tectonics Animations
This website has good animations of how plates might move relative to one another. They use slightly different terms from us. The top left animation shows a shear boundary; the top right shows subduction; and the bottom two show seafloor spreading.

Ocean Water Density Calculator
If you want to get a feel for how much temperature and salinity affect the density of ocean water, you might go here. This website has a calculator in which you enter the salinity and temperature, and it calculates the density of the water.

Coriolis Effect Animations
The animations on this site might help you better understand the Coriolis effect.

Seawater Motion
This website has a good discussion of global wind patterns, gyres, and the tides. The figures are very helpful.

A team of biologists has studied sponges from genus Euplectella and have noticed how the sponges engineer their glass spicules to be VERY strong, despite the weakness of the glass itself. One of the scientists says, "This creature's skeleton is a textbook lesson in mechanical engineering, offering valuable knowledge that could lead to new concepts in materials science and engineering design." Despite the remarkable design, they all conclude that evolution is the cause! It is amazing how blind some people can be.

This video shows a coral reef that has mostly recovered from a bleaching event. Even though it is mostly recovered, there are still some bleached corals on the reef.

Global Temperature Measurements
Some claim that global warming is reponsible for coral bleaching, but as these satellite data show, there is no global warming. Please note that the first graph is for the stratosphere, the temperatures of which we do not feel. The second graph is the relevant one, as it is for the troposphere. Note the TINY level of temperature fluctuation as well as the fact that there are about as many cooler-than-average periods as warmer-than-average periods.

Studies of The Exxon-Valdez Oil Spill
This site discusses the effects of and recovery from the famous oil spill in Prince William Sound.
